Welcome

Harrington Elementary |
Dear Parents,
Scissors, glue sticks, crayons, and markers are all provided at school. If your child has some of his/her own, they are welcome to bring them but it is not necessary. Once books are in their desks, there just isn't a lot or room for large pencil boxes and notebooks. Your child will need pencils. All pencils are not equal! Dixon/Ticonderoga sharpen nicely. Your child will also need a backpack or bag that they bring every day. The backpack should be large enough to handle shoes and a lunchbox. Backpacks with wheels do not fit in our cubbies. Please put your child's name on anything you think may be confused with someone else's. There will be a snack time each morning. I encourage you to send a snack (just one, we only have about 10 minutes). Children may also bring a drink (no glass containers, please). I think the snack cart will begin the first week of school, but maybe not the first day. Mornings are quite hectic at school. To help keep money straight, please send it in a labeled and sealed envelope or baggie. Envelopes do not need to be new. They can be some you are recycling from mail you have received. If you bring your child to the classroom, please allow them to take care of their belongings. It is important to encourage their independence and allow them to be self sufficient. Please remember to send a note for any change in your child's routine such as being picked up after school or taking a different bus. It is less confusing for children if they know of a change in their schedule before coming to school in the morning. If at all possible, please send a note, rather than calling the school during the day with a schedule change. Also, any time a child is absent, school policy states that we must have a note for the absence. Each child will receive a school folder. This should come to school each day. I check them each morning. Corrected class work and notes from the office or me will be inside the folder. Please put any notes for me there. We do this in K-4 to encourage organizational skills for our students. Please do not allow your daughter to wear any type of heels to school. I have found them to be a safety issue in the classroom as well as on the playground. I will send a weekly newsletter home with the children each Friday, as well as posting it on my site. It will tell you of any special plans, schedule changes, supplies needed for special projects, request for volunteers, when book orders are due, etc. I hope you will read these and keep the current one where you can refer to it, as this is the major way I communicate with parents throughout the year. Learning is an ongoing process. Everything your child learns this year will not come only from the classroom. As a parent, you play a huge part in your child's learning journey. Your encouragement and positive attitude about school will help your child see the importance of learning. Students need to come to school ready to learn. Getting enough rest is very important. It is difficult to learn if you are overtired and unable to concentrate. I encourage my students to read on a regular basis at home. Reading is a skill and it improves with practice. I am happy to loan out books if you need some new titles. I just ask that the books are returned in good condition. It is nice to have 2-3 parents that take the responsibility of being "Room Mother". If you are interested, please let me know. I look forward to getting to know both you and your child. I hope we will be working as partners to ensure your child has a successful year. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's progress at any time during the year, please feel free to set up an appointment. Mrs. Leackfeldt |
