Wow! The first day of
school! You will be surprised at how fast the year will fly by.
In your child's folder you will find a lot of papers from the office. Please make sure the Emergency Form is filled out and returned to me as soon as possible. To return papers, send notes, or make lunch payments, simply put them in your child's folder and put the folder in your child's backpack. I check folders every morning for notes, papers, and money. (Reminder if you send in money, please put that in a sealed envelope or baggie with your child's name on it.) I will also be sending papers home everyday. I have sent home information on the Read-Athon. This is a way we raise money for the library. We are aware your child does not "read", but they can get people to pledge money for the number of books they will read during the three weeks we run the Read-Athon. Please send the pledge sheets in by Friday (no money) and enjoy sharing books with your child. We will be doing a great deal of work with writing our names correctly. It becomes a frustrating task because I am working to break old habits - all capital letters. It is important to learn that only the first letter is capitalized and we need to use lines. Right now it is very hard work for those little fingers to grip the pencil firmly and correctly. It would be so beneficial if each night you had your child write his/her name correctly for you. There are so many skills we will work on throughout the year. Some things that should be reinforced at home right now are: recognizing his/her name, writing his/her name correctly, sorting letters from numbers, holding and using scissors properly, and being able to put on his/her own coat. I also believe the most important thing you can do each and every day with your child is read to him/her. Not only will it improve listening skills, which are so important in Kindergarten, but it will encourage many other pre-reading skills and a love of books. I will be screening the children this week for letter and number recognition, counting, colors, and shapes. Hopefully by Friday I will have this done. This gives me an idea of where your child is and good basis to watch their progress throughout the year. I will send home parent reports on the screenings, as soon as possible, so you will have the same information to work with. Our Reading program involves
reading readiness, phonics, writing, and letters. We will not
begin actual sounds of letters until November, but will be focusing on
letter formation, rhymes, rhythms, and active listener skills.
Monday No School - Labor Day Tuesday Our very first day of school together! We will discuss our classroom rules and playground rules - ask your child to share some of these with you. We will work with recognizing our names and drawing self-portraits. I will share the story The Kissing Hand. We will begin screening and readiness assessments today. In reading we will begin our morning song and recognizing our own names and our new friends. Wednesday In Social Studies we will focus on our school community. We will take a tour of the building. Our story today tells us how Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready For Kindergarten. We will share how we got ready for Kindergarten. We will also have "Show N' Tell" today. This is an opportunity for your child to share something "special" to the class. Thursday Our story today is Leo the Late Bloomer. We will have Mr. Elliot for Gym Class today. Please remember to send sneakers - sandals and crocs are not acceptable for Gym. We will be singing a new version of the ABC song. This helps to slow us down through L, M, N, O, P. In Math we are working with position words. We will have Art with Mrs. Paquette. Friday Wow! A week has gone by already. Wow! It's Friday already! We will share the story Blueberries for Sal. There will be some graphing, painting, and even eating involved. Book orders will be due today. Send in Read-Athon pledge sheets. |
