MSAD #37 POLICY

SPECIAL USE OF BUSES

It is the policy of MSAD #37 to allow the use of school buses by those organizations not directly connected with MSAD #37 in accordance with this policy.

 

The definition of a school bus, as it is referred to in this policy statement, includes all motor vehicles, as described in the law, with a carrying capacity of 10 or more passengers, owned or contracted by the School Department, and operated for the transportation of children and sponsoring programs to or from school or to or from school activities which are a part of the total school program.

 

School buses shall be used primarily for school purposes.  When available and when it shall not cause hardship to the school system or detriment to the operation or maintenance of the fleet, buses may be used in support of community sponsored non-school activities which are not commercial and are non-profit in nature.  All such use must be in conformance with state law.  Uses of buses for such activities shall be subject to approval of the School Board as a result of the adoption of this policy.

 

Any application to the Superintendent’s Office for the use of an MSAD #37 school bus under this policy shall require proof of liability and property damage or collision insurance.

 

Buses may also be available for use by the community in time of emergency or disasters, or whenever requested or commandeered by selectmen, the town’s Civil Defense Agency or other authorized officials, such as the police or the military.

 

The School Board has the right to approve or refuse the use of the buses to any requesting group.
